Women's Basketball Can't Keep Momentum in 77-69 OT Loss

1/30/2014 10:53:00 PM

UTPB women's basketball hit a three-pointer with time expired in regulation to cap a double-digit comeback and head to overtime, but the Falcons had no answers in OT for Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 77-69 home defeat in Odessa, Texas.

Down by as many as 12 points late in the first half, UTPB got within a point at 38-37 in the first four minutes of the second as part of a 13-2 run that saw the Falcons out-score UAFS 10-2 to start the second.

Keeping the deficit in single digits the remainder of the half, they got the Lions lead down to a single points twice more late in the half on a pair of free throws each from Brianna Jones and Valerie Barriga.

When Arkansas-Fort Smith scored the next five points to lead 67-61 with 2:17 remaining, UTPB responded by scoring the final six of regulation. Giselle Loya hit the back end of two attempts at the line and Danielle Wilson grabbed an offensive board and took it back up for a basket to trail 67-64.

The Falcons missed threes on each of their next two possessions, but the Lions were unable to take advantage on offense, missing a layup and later a free throw in a one-and-one situation with seven seconds to play, and Keyondra White took advantage on the other end of the court, getting off a game-tying three with around half a second left on the clock that went through the net with time expired.

UTPB was unable to carry the momentum into OT as Fort Smith scored the first six points and held the Falcons to just two points in taking the eight-point win.

Loya led the Falcons with 17 points, hitting four 3-pointers to lead all players while adding 10 rebounds. Barriga poured in 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field with a perfect 6-of-6 night at the line. Wilson grabbedd a team-best 11 rebounds, nine of them offensive.

Justyne Huber led all players with 21 points for the Lions, while Maddy Backus added 15 in the win.

UAFS out-shot UTPB 51 percent to 27.5 on the night, but the Falcons controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Lions 54 to 39 with 29 rebounds coming on offensive possessions.

UTPB is back at home this weekend, hosting Rogers State Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
