Betsill, Sharp Power Falcons Past #23 Fort Hays State 2-0

9/5/2013 9:29:00 PM

Brendan Betsill scored his first goal at UTPB from in front of his team's bench, and Logan Sharp added another strike in the final minute of the night as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory Thursday night in its season opener at home against nationally-ranked Fort Hays State.

Betsill lined up outside the field of play to wind up for a free kick from over 40 yards out in front of the UTPB bench in the game's 80th minute. His blast sailed over players from both teams lined up inside the box and traveled above Fort Hays State goalkeeper Kent Freund to find the back of the net and break a 0-0 tie.

Logan Sharp ended any attempt at a rally by the 23rd-ranked Tigers with his first goal of the season from 25 yards out in the middle of the field to the upper left corner with just 45 seconds remaining to lock up the victory.

UTPB goalkeeper Craig Branum was perfect on the night, stopping all five shots he faced as FHSU held a 12-9 shot lead in the match. But the best save of the evening was one where Branum wasn't involved in the play. He got stuck outside of the net having tried to make an attempt on the ball as Fort Hays State played the ball inside the box, but German Chavarria kept the Tigers from taking a 1-0 lead by blocking an attempt by Tanner Brock into a seemingly wide-open net.

The Falcons are back home this weekend, hosting Colorado State - Pueblo Saturday night at 7 p.m.
