Volleyball Drops Pair to Close Out Heartland/Lone Star Crossover

UTPB volleyball finished play at the Heartland/Lone Star Crossover with a pair of Saturday losses, dropping a five-set match against Texas A&M - Kingsville 22-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 and 13-15 before suffering a loss to Texas A&M - Commerce in four sets 25-22, 17-25, 19-25 and 23-25..

The Falcons came back in the first match of the day twice after dropping sets, taking the second set by 10 points to tie the match at 1-1 and sending the contest to a decisive fifth set with a four-point fourth set win.

UTPB broke away from the Javelinas in set two with an eight-point swing to give it a decisive 13-4 lead. The teams traded points for the remainder of the set until a Taylor Harmon kill evened the contest at one apiece with a 25-15 win in the second.

The Falcons came back again in the fourth after dropping the third set where they held a 22-20 lead before surrendering five of the final six points. UTPB actually trailed for a large portion of the fourth set, falling behind 20-14, before closing out the fourth on an 11-2 run behind five kills and a pair of aces by Keeley Brogdon.

Each team used runs to its advantage in the fifth, with the Javelinas erasing a four-point UTB lead with five straight points, and the Falcons scoring the next three to hold a 12-10 advantage. But Texas A&M-Kingsville had one more run in it, scoring five of the final six points to take the set and match with a 15-13 win.

Melissa Lusk and Keeley Brogdon each had 12 kills in the match to lead the Falcons, while Terra Peil and Taylor Harmon each hit double digits with 10. Ariel Fralick had a team-high 29 assists and Jordan McDonald recorded a UTPB-best 28 digs.

The Falcons came out strong in their second match of the day against Texas A&M - Commerce. UTPB came away with the first five points of the match and held a 10-2 lead. The Lions pulled back toward the end of the set, winning seven straight broken up by a UTPB point and followed by three more in succession for TAMCU to trail by a point at 23-22. UTPB earned the first set win on a block by Morgann Davis and Terra Peil and an attack error to win 25-22.

UTPB wasn't as successful the remainder of the contest as Texas A&M - Commerce grabbed early leads en route to winning each of the second and third sets. The Falcons fared better in the fourth, leading 7-2 before Commerce rallied to even out the set before winning the final two points in winning the fourth 25-23.

Lusk and Brogdon each had eight kills to once again lead the Falcon attack. Fralick led UTPB with 19 assists, and Brogdon had 26 digs on the match to lead the team. Terra Peil had 10 blocks in the four sets, and Morgann Davis recorded eight as the Falcons tallied 17 blocks in the contest.
