The University of Texas of the Permian Basin ended its stay at the 2013 Heartland Conference Softball Championships Friday afternoon with a 2-1 loss against Texas A&M International in the weekend's first elimination game in San Antonio, Texas.
Each team scored a run in the top of the first with the Dustdevils striking in the top of the inning as Kristen LaBuhn led off the game with a single into center, stole second and scored with two outs on a base hit to left by Mariena Gallardo.
The Falcons countered in the bottom half of the frame with a two out run of their own on a single to left by
Nikki Brailsford to drive in
Chelsey Morgan to tie the contest at 1-1.
Gallardo drove in the game-winning run in the top of the fourth, leading off the inning with a home run to center to give TAMIU a 2-1 lead.
The one run lead held the remainder of the game despite UTPB getting a baserunner on base in each of the final four innings.
Desiree Valero kept UTPB within a run in the seventh, stranding three runners on base with a pop up to the catcher. She threw all seven innings for the Falcons, giving up two runs off of nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out five.
Cene Padilla led UTPB with a pair of base hits at the top of the lineup as the Falcons first five batters all recorded at least one hit.
