Nick Duffield threw nine shutout innings and
Ryne Head drove in a pair of runs as UTPB baseball picked up a 4-0 win over fifth-ranked St. Mary's in game two of a Saturday doubleheader in San Antonio, Texas. St. Mary's took the opening game between the two teams by the same score of 4-0.
Duffield gave up five hits and three walks while strinking out a season high eight batters in his first complete game shutout of the season.
The Falcons got to St. Mary's starting pitcher Matt McClain right away in the top of the first, scoring two runs despite recording one hit in the inning.
Tyler Forney drew a leadoff walk and moved to second as
Neil Madsen singled into left.
Mike Briseno followed with a walk on four straight pitches to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Head drove in the first run of the game on a fielders choice up the middle as St. Mary's got the force out at second as Forney scored from third.
Arturo Carrera drove in another run on a sac bunt back to the pitcher to score Madsen.
Forney scored the team's third run in the top of the fifth, getting on base with a one out double to left. Madsen walked behind him to put runners on first and second, and a single by Head into right allowed Forney to cross the plate for the second time in the game.
UTPB added their fourth and final run in the top of the eighth when
Michael Rice singled to left to drive in
Tanor Tinley from third.
St. Mary's controlled the opening game, scoring all four of its runs in the first four innings of the seven inning game.
Carl O'Neal held UTPB to just one hit in the game, a double by Briseno in the Falcons third at bat of the day.
The teams battle for the series win Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
