Softball Ends Regular Season With 11-9 Win Over Newman

Box Score The University of Texas of the Permian Basin wrapped up a three game sweep over Newman Sunday afternoon, coming out on the winning end of an offensive battle that saw 20 runs scored in an 11-9 win over the Jets in Wichita, Kan.

The Falcons rebounded after losing a 4-0 lead after the top of the first when Newman scored five in the bottom half of the inning by scoring four in the second and a pair in the third to take a 10-5 lead through three.

Cene Padilla started off the game with a home run to center and Kara Isbel drove a ball past the fences in center with a runner on base to highlight a four-run top of the first.

The Falcons responded after Newman took the lead with five runs on just two hits in the bottom half of the inning, scoring four more runs in the top of the second to jump ahead 8-5. Chelsey Morgan and Nikki Brailsford each drove in one run and Amber Gutierrez scored two on a double down the line to left in the team's second straight four-run frame.

UTPB tacked two more runs on in the third as two runs scored on a fielding error at second with two outs to score runners from second and third to put the Falcons on top 10-5.

Newman rallied with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a lone run to trail 10-9 through five innings.

Taleas Marble gave the Falcons a little bit of breathing room in the sixth, driving the team's third home run of the game out to right center for what proved to be the game's final run.

Megan Richards earned the win for UTPB, entering in the second and allowing a pair of runs in three innings of action. Elita Sendejo recorded her first save of the season, tossing a perfect seventh inning with one strike out.

Isbel and Gutierrez paced the offence with three hits each on the day. Gutierrez drove in a team-high three runs and was one of four players to score a pair of runs.
