The University of Texas of the Permian Basin hit three doubles and three triples in the first game of the day in a 7-4 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith Sunday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa, Texas. The Lions ended victorious in a 6-2 non-conference game to end the day.
Jordyn Van Atta came through in the bottom of the first, driving a ball over the head of the UAFS right fielder to score
Neil Madsen from first to take a 1-0 lead.
UTPB responded in the bottom of the third after the Lions got their first run of the game with a pair of their own off of back-to-back run-scoring extra base hits.
Neil Madsen tripled off of the top of the wall to right center, scoring
Tyler Forney from first, and Van Atta collected his second double of the game to bring home Madsen to put the Falcons up 3-1. UTPB added a third and final run in the inning as what should have been the third out of the inning on a ground ball to short was thrown in the dirt at first to let Van Atta score unearned.
The Falcons were able to minimize the damage in the top of the fourth as Arkansas-Fort Smith was only able to get one run with the bases loaded as Curtis Clark hit a soft ground ball in the hole at second where
Tanor Tinley was unable to make a play at first.
Travis Wilcox was able to get out of trouble on the mound, getting Ryan Pongonis out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning with a 4-2 lead.
UAFS closed to within a run in the fifth on a single through the left side by Koby Chadick and the ball was bobbled in left to allow Kyle Dickens to score to make it 4-3.
The Falcons pulled ahead to lead by three with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Van Atta hit a looping single to left that hit in front of the left fielder and got away from him, rolling to the wall and allowing Van Atta to reach third on the play.
Mike Briseno drove him in on the net at bat with a line drive back up the middle. He scored three batters later on a
Brian Gustafson triple to center, the team's second of the game to leave the inning with a 6-3 advantage.
Each team scored one in the seventh, UAFS getting one on a Dickens homer to just right of center field and the Falcons on a Madsen RBI double after Cochran hit the team's third triple of the game.
Travis Wilcox picked up his second win of the season in an eight inning outing. He was charged with four runs, three earned off eight hits and three walks while striking out five in the game.
Daniel Bernal earned his second save of the season in throwing a perfect ninth inning.
Van Atta led UTPB with three hits on the day and he and Madsen each scored a pair and drove in two runs.
Arkansas-Fort Smith came back in extra innings to take the fourth game of the weekend, scoring four in the top of the ninth to take a 6-2 lead. Josh Gibson came to the plate with nobody out and the bases loaded and proceeded to empty the bases with a triple deep to right center to put the Lions ahead by three. Gibon scored on an infield single to first for what proved to be the four run winning margin.
UTPB scored its runs on a sac fly by
Tanor Tinley in the top of the fourth to score Madsen, and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a bunt that scored
Ozzie Bueno when UAFS attempted to get the out at the plate and were late.
The Falcons return to action next weekend at home to close out the 2013 season with four games against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
