Newman scored a run in each of the first three innings while holding UTPB to a lone run in the top of the fourth as the Falcons went down 4-1 Saturday afternoon in the third of three games in Wichita, Kan.
TJ Shedrick made a lead-off triple pay off in the top of the first, scoring on a ground out to short to put the Jets in the lead 1-0.
Newman added a lone run in each of the second and third innings to grab a 3-0 lead through three.
Jordyn Van Atta put the Falcons on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth, driving a ball to left center to score
Trey Cochran and cut the NU lead to two.
The score remained 3-1 until Newman capitalized on a one-out walk by Jerrod Flax. He was moved to second on a ground out to second and scored in the next at bat with a successful steal of third, scoring as the ball was thrown into the outfield.
Travis Wilcox was charged with four runs, three of them earned, off of six hits and two walks. He struck out three in his seven inning outing.
Zak Mickens earned the seven inning win for Newman, striking out six and giving up just one run off of four hits and three walks. John Branum collected his first same of the season, striking out batters for two of the four outs he recorded on the day.
UTPB hits the road for one game this coming week Tuesday afternoon against Abilene Christian in Abilene, Texas.
