UTPB baseball scored six runs in its final two innings of Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader opener, breaking open a 3-3 tie with five in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-3 win over Oklahoma Christian at Roden Field in Odessa, Texas. The visiting Eagles kept UTPB from rallying late in game two before picking up a 6-5 win in 10 innings.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth,
Tyler Forney led the frame off with his second straight single up the middle of the field. A steal of second and a single to right by
Mike Briseno left him on third with one out, and he scored as
Neil Madsen grounded out to second to bring the score to a 3-3 tie.
Scott Hastings gave the Falcons their second lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth with a double into left field to drive in
Arturo Carrera from third and grab a 4-3 advantage. UTPB piled on four more runs in the inning, scoring one on a fielders choice sacrifice bunt attempt with the bases loaded that left all runners safe and scored
Teague Esparza, a two run RBI single by Briseno and one on a sac fly to right by
Jordyn Van Atta.
Isaac Diaz earned his second win of the season, throwing three scoreless innings in relief for UTPB. He gave up two hits and walked none while striking out three in improving to 2-1 on the season.
The Falcons came from behind to recover late in game two as well, erasing a 3-0 deficit with five consecutive runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Forney brought UTPB back to within one in the seventh with a two out single through the left side to score both Hastings and Quintero.
Neil Madsen tied it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, scoring from second on a ground ball to first that ricocheted off of the OCU first baseman's leg.
Michael Rice came through in a pinch hit situation towards the end of the inning, entering in the game in a pinch hitting role with two outs and the bases loaded to line the first pitch of the at bat over the pitcher's head into center to drive in Carrera and Diaz to head to the ninth leading 5-3.
The Eagles rebounded to come through with a pair of hits while taking advantage of two UTPB errors in the field to tie the game with two runs, but left the bases loaded on a ground ball up the middle to head to the bottom of the ninth tied 5-5.
Briseno was able to reach on a one out single into center and later advanced into scoring position with a clean steal of second, but was left stranded on base as the game headed into extra innings.
Oklahoma Christian pulled through with the eventual game-winning run on a one out double into right center by Blake Stringer to score Dillon Andrews, and the Falcons went down in order in their half of the 10th in the one run loss.
Forney and Briseno led UTPB with four hits each on the day, while Forney scored three times in the two games and Rice drove in a team-high three runs.
The Falcons hit the road this weekend, traveling to Wichita, Kan., for a Friday-Saturday three game set against Newman.
