Hilltoppers Overpower Falcons Saturday 9-5

UTPB baseball held a 4-2 lead after the top of the third inning Sunday afternoon, but St. Edward's scored seven of the final eight runs of the game as the Hilltoppers took a 9-5 win Saturday afternoon at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin, Texas.

UTPB rebounded after trailing 2-0 in the first inning to put up a four-run top of the third, highlighted by Jordyn Van Atta's third home run of the season. Neil Madsen reached on a fielder's choice to second with runners on the corners as St. Edward's chose to get the out at second base, allowing Ty Forney to score from third on the play. Jordyn Van Atta left the ballpark in the next at bat, driving in three runs on a home run to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead.

St. Edward's scored the game's next six runs, tying the contest with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and rallying to score three in the bottom of the fourth with a three run inning. The Hilltoppers added another run in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead out to 8-4 through five.

Both teams added one run to their scores over the final four innings. UTPB drove a run home in the top of the seventh when Scott Hastins scored from third on a passed ball, and St. Edward's reclaimed the four-run margin with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth.

UTPB returns home this week, hosting Oklahoma Christiand for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
