The University of Texas of the Permian Basin rallied for two runs in the final three innings Tuesday afternoon to win in the bottom of the seventh and defeat Angelo State in the opening game of the doubleheader between the two schools. ASU came back to take the second game 9-3.
Lauren Smith put Angelo State up 1-0 in the top of the first, lining a two-out pitch to the base of the left field wall to score Maddy McGarity from second.
Cene Padilla got the run back in the bottom half of the inning for UTPB, leading off with a full count home run that wrapped around the foul pole in left for her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
UTPB added two more in the inning as
Anna Hollingsworth and
Nikki Brailsford followed with walks. Both runners moved up a base on
Chelsey Morgan's sacrifice bunt to third, and each scored on a one out double to the gap in right center by
Taleas Marble to give UTPB a 3-1 lead after one.
Smith was responsible for Angelo State's second run of the game in the third, hitting her second double of the day into right center to score Kacie Easley from first with two outs.
Angelo State scored a run in each the fourth and fifth innings, tying the game in the fourth on a squeeze bunt by Lanie Robinson to score Ambra Hill from third and a solo shot to center by Easley to give the Rambelles a 4-3 lead.
UTPB tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a Marble single into center with two on that scored
Anna Hollingsworth from second.
The Falcons scored the winning run in the opener in the bottom of the seventh, starting the inning on a Brailsford single to the wall in center.
Chelsey Morgan put pinch runner
Tomie Ellard in motion with a sac bunt in front of the plate, and Ellard rounded second and took off towards an uncovered third. ASU's throw to third was offline and rolled along the fence, allowing Ellard to safely advance home for the 5-4 win.
Desiree Valero picked up the complete game victory, her second of the season. She struck out nine in seven innings while allowing four runs on four hits and five walks.
Mary Kate McKay took the loss for Angelo State after entering in the fifth and throwing two innings in relief. She was charged with one run on three hits and a walk.
Marble drove in three of UTPB's four runs in the game, tallying half of the teams six hits with hits in each of her three at bats.
UTPB struck first in game two scoring in the bottom of the first on a double steal with runners on the corners. Brailsford broke for second and got caught in a pickle, giving Padilla a chance to break for home and beat the throw while Brailsford advanced safely to second.
Angelo State took possession of the lead in the next inning, scoring two on a two-run bomb by Darian Dunn to left for a 2-1 advantage.
UTPB matched the home run in the bottom half of the inning, as
Amber Gutierrez homered to center with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.
Angelo State got the run back in the third, but not before
Kara Isbel helped get both outs behind the plate. She gunned down Morgan Spearman attempting to steal second for the first out of the inning and tagged out McGarity at the plate on a throw from left as she tried to score from first on a double into left. The Rambelles eventually broke through to score on a Lauren Smith double into center to score Easley from second.
ASU scored four more runs in the top of the fifth, and the teams traded runs in each of the next two half innings.
Chelsey Morgan singled through the hole on the left side of the infield to score
Kati Walker with two outs, and the Rambelles scored their final run on a Walker homer to center in the top of the sixth.
Robinson picked up the win for ASU, tossing four innings while giving up two runs on five hits and a walk.
Tomie Ellard took the loss for UTPB, giving up a run on four hits in 2/3 of an inning.
UTPB is back in action this weekend, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State in the team's first Heartland Conference series of the season. First pitch Friday afternoon is scheduled for 2 p.m.
