The University of Texas of the Permian Basin guaranteed its second series win of the season over McMurry, blowing out the War Hawks 8-1 in game one before waiting out the elements for over an hour to rally in the ninth inning of a 4-3 come-from-behind win Friday afternoon in Abilene, Texas.
The UTPB offense was out in full force in the latter innings of the opening game of the doubleheader. The Falcons scored the first two runs of game one in the top of the fourth on run-scoring hits from
Michael Rice and
Arturo Carrera for a 2-0 lead.
The War Hawks grabbed a run back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left by Jon Mejia to trail by one.
The Falcons responded with two more in the top of the sixth, scoring one on a
Jordyn Van Atta single through the hole in the left side of the infield with the bases loaded to score
Neil Madsen. UTPB added a second run as Carrera grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to score
Mike Briseno.
They put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, adding on four more runs for what would be the final 8-1 score.
Ryne Head scored on a wild pitch after having led off the inning with a single up the middle during Ty Forney's at bat. Forney came through with an RBI double, scoring
Scott Hastings for the inning's second run, and the Falcons added two more runs as Forney scored on a wild pitch and a Van Atta single to the outfield the bring Madsen home from second.
Brett Rogers earned his second win against McMurry this season, allowing an earned run off of eight hits and a pair of walks in the seven inning complete game. He pitched out of trouble three different times in the game, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the first with no outs on a liner to second for the first out and an inning-ending double play to escape without any damage. He also stranded a pair of runners in each the third and fifth innings.
The teams played a more tightly contested game two as the Falcons found themselves trailing after a two-run bottom of the first by McMurry.
UTPB evened the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single up the middle by Madsen and a single up the middle by Rice with an error in center on the attempt to field the ball that let Madsen score from second.
After a 1:03 rain delay at the conclusion of the sixth inning, the War Hawks took the lead on a two-out run in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever
Jacob Ricossa to claim a 3-2 advantage.
UTPB rallied in the top of the ninth as Carrera led off the final inning with a single into center.

Ozzie Bueno into scoring position on a sacrifice, where pinch hitter
Trey Cochran tied the game on a single back up the middle to score Bueno. Cochran advanced to second on a single by Head, and scored a batter later on the second fielding error of the game in center on a Forney base hit up the middle.
Ricossa earned the win, throwing the final three innings of the game after the rain delay to improve to 2-1 on the season. He was charged with one run off three hits with a pair of strikeouts while walking none. He took over for
Nick Duffield who give up two runs, one earned on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the first six innings of the contest.
The Falcons look to sweep the series and earn their fifth win in six attempts against McMurry Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
