The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team came out on the short end Tuesday afternoon of a game that ended with a combined 21 runs scored and 35 hits, losing 14-7 at University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M.
UTPB took an early lead in the top of the second, scoring the game's first run on an
Arturo Carrera double to left center that scored
Tanor Tinley from first. Carrero later scored with two outs in the inning on an infield single for a 2-0 lead after the top of the second.
After a Mustangs home run that cut the lead in half, UTPB got the run back as
Michael Rice hit a two-out double to right to being
Trey Cochran for a 3-1 lead.
University of the Southwest climbed back into the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs off of four hits to claim a 4-3 advantage.
The Mustangs added two more in the bottom of the fourth in building a three run 6-3 lead.
Mike Briseno got a run back in the fifth, doubling down the line in left with two outs in the inning.
Beau Anderson scored him a batter later, singling to right to pull the Falcons within two runs.
Southwest added another run in the bottom of the fifth and scored two more in the sixth to lead 9-4.
Both teams traded multiple runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Anderson drove in Briseno again in the seventh after Briseno was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. The Falcons followed a three run inning by Southwest with two runs of its own in the eighth as Carerra scored on a Madsen double to right center and a Briseno infield single to short scored
Ozzie Bueno from third.
The Mustangs added two more in the bottom of the eighth for the 14-7 final score.
Briseno and Carerra led the Falcons on the night with three hits apiece and each scored twice on the night.
Daxton Deal led all players with four hits on the night out of the leadoff spot for Southwest, driving in a game-high five hits.
UTPB is back in action this weekend, traveling to Abilene for three games against McMurry.
