Falcons Leave Runs On Base in 3-2 Loss to TAMIU

3/23/2013 4:11:00 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin missed out on three chances with runners in scoring position in the final three innings in a 3-2 defeat to Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at Roden Field.

Texas A&M International took advantage on a bobbled exchange on a double play attempt that kept the inning alive off of a ground ball to short by Alex McKeon that scored Ryan Jozwiak from third.

A single put two runners on with a pair of outs recorded in the inning and Fernando Garza cleared the bases with a two-run double to the gap in left center to put the Dustdevils on top 3-0 after the top of the first.

UTPB starter Travis Wilcox and Jacob Ricossa kept the Dustdevils scoreless over the remaining eight innings, scattering five hits in the rest of the game.

UTPB got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Neil Madsen reached on a fielding error by the second baseman and Jordyn Van Atta was hit by a pitch. Michael Rice drove in Madsen with a two out single on a ground ball up the middle to the second base side of the second baseman to pull the Falcons to within two at 3-1.

The Falcons were the benefactor of a strong wind blowing in from right field all day in the top of the eighth as Mike Briseno reached on an infield pop up that was dropped. He moved to second on an errant pick off atempt and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Briseno scored a batter later on Trey Cochran's groundout to short as his RBI left UTPB down a run.

The Falcons left a total of five runners on base in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings. UTPB left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game with the tying run 180 feet away at second.

UTPB is back in action Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Hobbs, N.M., for a single non-conference game against University of the Southwest.
