Brett Rogers threw his second shutout of the season as The University of Texas of the Permian Basin defeated Texas A&M International 3-0 in the opening game of the weekend between the two teams. The Dustdevils took game two 12-5 Friday afternoon at Roden Field in Odessa, Texas.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as
Mike Briseno led off the inning with a double off of the wall in left center. A fly out to center moved him to third and he scored on a
Tanor Tinley single into shallow right.
Briseno scored UTPB's second run of the game, drawing a walk with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. He stole second on the first pitch of
Michael Rice's at-bat, s wiping his fourth base of the season, and scored as Rice singled into left for a 2-0 lead.
Rogers battled out of trouble in the top of the fifth after allowing a lead off double to Alex McKeon. He got two quick outs on fly balls to right and center before ending the inning on a hard line drive to left fielder
Ryne Head.
Tinley drove in Briseno for his third run of the day in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a fly ball deep enough to right to score him from third on a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Rogers improved to 4-4 on the season, giving up only a pair of hits while walking none. he struck out five in the complete game outting.
UTPB led early on in game two as
Jordyn Van Atta led off the bottom of the second with a single behind first base that dropped just inside of the foul line. He advanced to second on a sac bunt by Briseno and scored a batter later on a deep double over the head of the right fielder to take a 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M International got the run back in the top of the third, tying the game up on a fielder's choice ground out with runners on the corners by McKeon. UTPB got the force out at second but couldn't turn the double play in time as Ryan Jozwiak scored.
Madsen got the bottom of the fourth started with the team's second triple of the day hitting a ball off the wall in right center that bounced over the head of a pair of outfielders. He scored in the next at bat on a sacrifice fly oiut to center by Van Atta.
McKeon tied the game again in the top of the fifth, singling through the right side of the infield with runners on first and third to score Jeff Anderson and bring the game even at 2-2.
The Dustdevils took their first lead of the day in the top of the six with a pair of runs. A double by Jaron Shimmel to center scored Sean Smedley with one out, and TAMIU tacked on another run on a singled up the middle by Hector Gonzalez to lead 4-2.
UTPB was able to grab both tuns back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring one on a single by Van Atta to right that brought Head home and the tying run on a scortching comebacker by Briseno to score Madsen and even the game at 4-4 through six.
Alex Salas got the offense going for the Duustdevils to lead off the top of the seventh with a stand-up triple off the wall in right center. He scored a batter later on a single past a diving second baseman up the middle by McKeon.
A single by Smedley into shallow left scored McKeon from third to put the Dusdevils up 6-4, and TAMIU added two more runs on an infield hit by Shimmel and a ground out by Anderson.
The Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the seventh as
Beau Anderson doubled to the gap in right center to lead off the inning and later scored on a single by Head into center to trail 8-5.
TAMIU equaled its production from the inning prior in the top of the eighth, scoring four more runs to lead by the eventual final score of 12-5.
Jared Curnel earned the win in relief for Texas A&M International, entering in the sixth to throw 1.2 innings. He gave up three hits and a walk while allowing an earned run.
Briseno led the UTPB offense with four hits on the day in five at bats while also leading the team with three runs scored.
The teams close out the three game set Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
