3/2/2013 7:29:00 PM

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team's 13-game win streak was broken on the final day of the regular season Saturday, as UTPB dropped a six-point 77-71 overtime game at Oklahoma Christian in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The Falcons led nearly the entire first half, taking their first lead on a Giselle Loya 3-pointer that broke a 2-2 tie early on. A basket by Taniqua Ards and a three from Jocelyn Cook capped a 10-0 run to give UTPB an eight point 10-2 lead with 16:34 remaining in the first.

Oklahoma Christian was able to tie the game three minutes later on a Katy O'Steen three, but the Falcons built their lead back up to seven with 11:00 to go in the first on back-to-back baskets by Cook and Briannah Matthews.

UTPB grabbed its largest lead of the half in the final minutes of the first, scoring the final four points of the half on a pair of free throws by Teisha King and a basket by Ards that put it up 37-27 with 1:57 remaining in the half.

That large lead disappeared after halftime as the Eagles closed to within a possession on a 3-pointer by Sydney Hill at the 16:22 mark of the second.

OCU trailed by a single point with 14:16 to play and took its first lead of the second half 48-46 with 10:15 remaining.

Neither team was able to pull away down the stretch as the score was tied five times in the final 10 minutes and neither team held a lead larger than three points.

Down by two in the final minute, Cook hit a pair of free throws with :25 remaining in regulation that brought the game to a 61-61 tie, the ninth of the game, and proved to be the final points of regulation as each team missed a shot before time expired.

The Falcons scored the first four points of the overtime session behind an Ards basket and free throws from Loya.

The Eagles countered with a basket from O'Steen and a three by Hill to take a one-point 66-65 lead.

A king jumper put the Falcons back on top 67-66, but the Eagles went on to out-score UTPB 11-4 over the final minute and a half to claim the six point victory.

Ards paced the Falcons offense with 20 points on the day. Teisha King added 14 points and tied her season high with nine assists, and Loya scored 11 points behind 3-of-6 shooting behind the arc. Matthews led UTPB with 12 rebounds on the day.

Hill hit 11-of-20 field goals on the afternoon to lead all scorers with 29 points in the game while O'Steen added 21 and seven rebounds, and Roz Hamilton tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Falcons look to get back on track next weekend as UTPB hosts the 2013 Heartland Conference women's basketball championships. The HC regular season champion, the #1-seeded Falcons will tip-off Friday night at 5:30 p.m.
