Falcons Eliminated From NCAA Tournament with 78-68 Loss to Colorado Mesa

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team's incredible season came to an end Saturday night with a 78-68 loss in the South Central Regional semifinals to #1 seed and host Colorado Mesa at Brownson Arena in Grand Junction, Colo.

The Falcons stayed within a possession or two of the Mavericks for much of the first half, leading 2-1 early on off of a basket by Jocelyn Cook.

UTPB rallied to tie the game at 20-20 on four straight points with a Taniqua Ards layup and a pair of free throws from Ards on the next possession with 5:19 remaining in the first.

Another Ards layup and subsequent free throw after being fouled on the shot gave UTPB a 25-24 lead with 4:01 left in the half, but CMU rallied before halftime with a 12-2 run to head into halftime leading 36-27.

UTPB got back into the game early in the second half, closing to within four as Teisha King scored six of the team's points consecutively to close within four points at 43-39 inside of 16 minutes.

The teams traded baskets on each of the next four possessions before the Mavericks started to pull away. CMU scored five in a row to lead by nine and eventually went ahead by 10, 61-51, with 6:07 remaining in the game and led by double digits the remainder of the game.

Ards led UTPB in scoring for the second straight game at the NCAA Tournament with a game-high 20 points. Teisha King added 18 despite falling into early foul trouble after picking up her second personal foul just 2:01 into the game.Briannah Matthews double-doubled,  grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds to go with 12 points.

Katrina Selso and Kelsey Sigl each scored 17 points in leading the Colorado Mesa offense, while Sharaya Selsor added 14 points and five assists.
