UTPB Baseball ensured its first conference series win of the season Friday afternoon with a pair of 6-1 & 8-1 wins on the road at Oklahoma Panhandle State.
Trailing 1-0 in the opener after an unearned run in the bottom of the first, a
Tyler Forney single with two outs and two on scored
Ryne Head and
Trey Cochran to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
A
Mike Briseno double with one out in the bottom of the third added another run as
Neil Madsen scored from second on the hit.
UTPB put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on RBI singles from
Ozzie Bueno and Madsen and a run-scoring double by
Jordyn Van Atta to put the Falcons in the lead 6-1.
Brett Rogers pitched all but one out for UTPB, allowing a lone unearned run off of five hits and one walk while striking out a pair.
The UTPB offense came in bunches again in game two. Cochran reached on an error with two runners on and no outs in the second to allow Van Atta to score from second. A single by
Tanor Tinley drove in Briseno from third.
Nelson Quintero drove in Cochran and advanced to second on an error and a gound out to second by Head scored Tinley to take a 4-0 lead.
UTPB added three more runs in the top of the fourth after starting off the inning with five straight hits. Cochran led things off with a double and advanced to third on a bunt single by tinley. A Quintero double moved Tinley to third and scored Cochran, and both runners were put in motion as Head singled to score Tinley. A Forney double scored Quintero to put the Falcons up 7-0 after the top of the fourth.
OPSU scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth, and the Falcons added one in the top of the ninth as Madsen singled to score
Teague Esparza from third with two outs for an 8-1 lead.
Nick Duffield struck out six in earning his first win of the season, giving up an unearned run off of a pair of hits and three walks in seven innings of action.
UTPB goes for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
