The University of Texas of the Permian Basin got a pair of home runs in the third inning of game two from
Cene Padilla and
Nikki Brailsford as the Falcons put up a nine spot in the top of the third on their way to taking a 19-11 victory against Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. The Zias had opened the day with a 16-2 win in five innings.
Trailing 4-0 after ENMU scored all four in its half of the first, all nine of UTPB's runs came with two outs as Padilla homered to center to score
Amber Gutierrez and cut the deficit in half.
Following an illegal pitch that pushed Morgan to third and scored Isbel,
Taleas Marble walked on four straight pitches to put runners at the corners.
Brailsford cleared the bases, going deep to center and give UTPB a 7-4 lead.
The Falcons tacked on two more as Padilla singled into center to drive in her third and fourth runs of the inning for a 9-4 advantage.
The Falcons scored multiple runs in each of the next four innings, starting with a two-run double in the fourth by Brailsford that scored Marble and Morgan.
Isbel singled to right in the top of the fifth with two on and no out to score Padilla and move Hollingsworth over to third. She came in in the next at bat on a throwing error by the pitcher, and Isbel came home on a Morgan double to center.
Morgan and Marble each singled in the sixth with two outs and two on to score one run each, and the Falcons loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the seventh as they kept up the offensive pressure. Padilla drove in her fifth run of the game on a sac fly for the inning's first out, and a throwing error two at bats later gave the Falcons their 18th and 19th runs of the game.
Janessa Martinez got the win in game two, throwing 4.1 innings in the circle while allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on six hits and three walks while striking out two.
UTPB out-hit Eastern New Mexico 201- in the game and scored at least four runs off of each of the four pitchers the Zias threw.
The Falcons kept the game close in the early innings of game one, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to trail 3-2. Marble went deep to left with one out in the inning for the team's first run of the day, and Brailsford hit a pinch hit sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for the inning's second out.
The game got out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, however, as the Zias scored 13 runs off of nine hits to lead by the final of 16-2.
UTPB is back in action Saturday afternoon, traveling to Canyon, Texas, for a doubleheader against #3 West Texas A&M. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
