The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team took its first lead of the second half with 3:01 remaining in the game Saturday night, but a layup from Michael Patterson with seven seconds left gave Oklahoma Panhandle State a 55-54 win in Goodwell, Okla.
Xavier Martin put the Falcons ahead 54-53 on a layup and subsequent free throw after he was fouled on the shot attempt, placing UTPB in the lead for the first time since the 18:10 mark of the first half.
Those proved to be the final points of the game for the Falcons, as UTPB only attempted one more shot in the final three minutes, a missed 3-pointer, as OPSU forced three turnovers in UTPB's final five possessions.
The Aggies held the lead for a large majority of the first half and led by as many as 13 points in the first 20 minutes before the Falcons cut it down to nine heading into the half.
UTPB worked the deficit down to three at the 14:07 mark of the second half, scoring six in a row on a 3-pointer from Madison Turner and a conventional 3-point play by Rob Heyer after he was fouled on a made layup.
Heyer pulled UTPB to within one two different times in the half, hitting a three to close to within 43-42, and following a three by Christopher Capinia, hit another from downtown to trail 46-45.
Keith Martin tied the game up at 49-49 all on a layup with 5:33 remaining, and the Falcons took the lead four possessions later on Xavier Martin's and-one play.
The loss was UTPB's first Heartland defeat in four games and drops the Falcons back to .500 in conference action at 5-5 on the season.
Xavier Martin led the Falcons with 13 points on the night, handing out five assists while collecting three steals, both team-highs. Anthony Dees added 10 points and a team-best nine boards, while Rob Heyer scored nine with eight rebounds.
Bill Lee led the Aggies with 13 points and 13 rebounds on the night.
UTPB looks to get back on track next Thursday, traveling to Arkansas-Fort Smith for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
