Softball Wraps Up Play at St. Mary's Spring Softball Classic

2/3/2013 5:04:00 PM

The latter innings were unkind to The University of Texas of the Permian basin women's softball team Sunday, as the Falcons suffered a 4-2 defeat on a two-run walk-off home run against Tarleton State before a 7-3 loss in their final game against Texas A&M Kingsville at the St. Mary's College Softball Classic in San Antonio, Texas.
UTPB picked up single runs in each of the third and fourth innings, scoring the first run of the game as Kara Isbel scored on a fielders choice with runners on first and second. Tarleton got the force out at second base, but an error at second allowed Isbel to reach home plate from second on the play.
Leslianne Ericson led off the fourth with a triple into right and scored in the next at bat, as Lucero Porras' fly out to center was deep enough to score her on a sacrifice fly for the innings first out.
Tarleton State tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth after its first two batters safely reached base on a double and single. Kelsey Latta singled to left and was thrown out at second, but both runners on base successfully reached home on the play to even the score at 2-2.
The Texanns ended the game in the bottom of the seventh as Courtney Vroman went deep to left for a two run home run with two outs to take the 4-2 win.
UTPB came right back and took the first lead against Texas A&M Kingsville as Amber Gutierrez led off the second with a double into left. Following an Anna Hollingsworth walk, a double steal moved both runners into scoring position and Gutierrez scored on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead.
Kingsville responded to tie the game at 1-1, scoring on an error at third that let Bailey Offill score from third.
UTPB got the run back in the top of the third as Cene Padilla led off the inning with her first home run of the season to put the Falcons back up 2-1.
TAMK also scored in the bottom half of the inning, piecing together three hits as Offill drove in a run with two outs on a single to left field to tie the game back up at 2-2.
UTPB scored another run in the top of the fourth as Padilla flew out to center with the bases loaded to score Hollingsworth on a sac fly.
The Javelinas took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a pair of unearned runs as the Falcons gave up a pair of hits and two errors that led to both runs scoring.
Texas A&M Kingsville put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of two more errors to score three runs, all with two outs in the inning.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend, traveling to Stephensville, Texas, for the 2013 Tarleton State Invitational.
