Men's Basketball Drops Conference Finale 89-62 at Dallas Baptist

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin concluded its 2012-13 Heartland Conference schedule Thursday night unable to shut down the hot hand of Dallas Baptist as the Patriots pulled away with an 89-62 defeat of UTPB in Dallas, Texas.

The Patriots made their living behind the 3-point line Thursday, connecting on nearly 70 percent of their attempts from behind the arc (16-of-23).

UTPB led early on after winning the opening tip, scoring on its first two possession with layups from Rob Heyer and Keith Martin.

Dallas Baptist didn't wait long to heat up, hitting three 3-pointers in the first 4:19 to take a 14-4 lead.

DBU led by as many as 17 in the first half but the Falcons responded with nine straight points on threes by Heyer, Anthony Dees and Dominique Brooks at the 2:02 mark of the first half to pull within eight. The Patriots kept UTPB scoreless the rest of the half and increased its lead back out to 12 at the break on a pair of baskets by Nick Fox.

Dallas Baptist kept up the pressure on offense in the second half in increasing its lead to 23 points halfway through the period before defeating UTPB by 27.

Madison Turner paced the UTPB offense with 15 points while leading the Falcons on the glass with six rebounds while Heyer added 13 points on the night.

Nick Fox led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 10-of-15 shots from the field and 3-of-4 behind the arc. Charles Allen led DBU with four 3-pointers in scoring 20 points for the game.

UTPB closes out the 2012-13 season this Saturday, traveling to Oklahoma Christian for a 4 p.m. non-conference contest.
