Newman proved to be too much for The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team, knocking off the Falcons 80-62 at Newman Gymnasium in Wichita, Kan.
The Jets never trailed in the game and led by as many as nine points just 3:46 in to the game as Newman hit five straight field goals to hold a 13-4 lead.
The Falcons were able to close to within five points two different times, the first on a
Dominique Brooks layup at 10:55 and a
Fabian Sebastian bucket at 9:38.
Newman pushed the lead above double digits at the 7:25 mark of the first half and went into halftime leading 36-22.
The Falcons finished the second half four points shy of doubling its offensive production from the first half, but Newman increased its scoring output in the second 20 minutes as well and never led by fewer than 11 points in the 18-point win.
Sebastian led UTPB with 14 points off the bench and a game high 16 rebounds, nine of them coming on offense.
Tyler Reynolds added 13 points in a non-starting role and
Madison Turner chipped in 11.
Trae Beck led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Frankie Drayton added 13 points for the Jets.
UTPB is back on the home court next week, hosting St. Edward's Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
