The University of Texas of the Permian Basin out-hit nationally-ranked St. Mary's in both games Friday afternoon but left 16 total runners left stranded on base as the #15 Rattlers defeated UTPB 8-2 and 3-1 at Roden Field in Odessa, Texas.
Already leading 1-0 after scoring in the top of the first, St. Mary's (7-3, 6-2 HC) added a apir of runs in the fourth on a pair of base hits that each drove in a runner from scoring position.
The Rattlers put up three more in the top of the fifth as Mario Maldonado singled to right to score Derek Moczygemba after he had led off the inning with a triple to right. Maldonalo later scored from third on a single by Brandon Bates and Bates crossed home on a sac fly in foul territory in right.
The Falcons (2-7, 0-5) got their first run of the opening game in the bottom of the fifth on three straight base hits with two outs.
Ryne Head and
Ryan Popescu each singled in to center, and
Mike Briseno's base hit in to left was deep enough for Head to score from second.
St. Mary's added two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run double by Bates to increase its lead to 8-1.
UTPB got the offense going in the bottom of the seventh as Briseno doubled down the line in left to get into scoring position with one out.
Zach Vlietstra scored him with a double into left, and
Tyler Forney joined him on base with a ground ball single deep in the hole to short.
Neil Madsen singled through the right side of the infield to load the bases with one out, but reliever Kyle Bumpas wrapped up the game with two straight strikeouts to give St. mary's the six-run win.
Carl O'Neal improved to 3-0 for the Rattlers in 2013, striking out four while allowing one run on eight hits and no walks.
Nick Duffield was charged with the loss for UTPB, falling to 0-3 on the season as he allowed six runs, four earned, on eight hits and a walk with three strike outs.
St. Mary's again scored first in game two, as all four of the game's runs came in the third inning. A Moczygemba single through the infield into right with two on scored one, and both base runners came home on a Maldonado double to the wall in left center.
UTPB got one back in its half of the third as Madsen singled on a hard ball up the middle that scored Briseno from second.
The Falcons were able to get runners on base in four of the final six innings, but left runners stranded in three.
Rene Solis (2-0) struck out 11 in the start for St. Mary's, tossing eight innings of one-run ball while allowing eight hits and one run. Jonathan Perez earned his second save on the season in pitching the ninth.
Brett Rogers was saddled with the loss for UTPB, giving up all three runs in 5.2 innings on five hits and three walks. He struck out four.
Jacob Ricossa struck out five in 3.1 innings of relief, including all three batters in the top of the seventh.
Madsen led the Falcons with seven hits in eight at-bats and is now hitting .500 though nine games after entering Friday's action with a .333 BA.
The teams close out the three game set Saturday afternoon at Roden Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
