The University of Texas of the Permian Basin softball team closed out action at the Tarleton State Invitational Sunday, losing 11-2 in five innings against East Central before falling 6-3 to Tarleton State in its fourth and final game of the weekend at the TSU Softball Complex in Stephenville, Texas.
The Falcons had to play from behind right away in the first game of the day as East Central used a pair of back-to-back home runs on its way to scoring four runs in the top of the first.
UTPB put together four hits in the bottom half of the inning to grab a pair of runs back.
Cene Padilla led off the inning with a double in to right and quickly came in to score as
Taleas Marble followed up with another double into the outfield. Marble came in to score after
Kara Isbel singled down the line in to right to move her to third and
Chelsey Morgan hit a ball in to center to score her on a sacrifice fly.
The Tigers put the game out of reach in the second, hitting two more home runs to score five more and hold a 9-2 lead after an inning and a half.
UTPB led early on in the second game of the day against Tarleton State as Padilla led off the game with a base hit, this time a single into left. A HBP to
Anna Hollingsworth moved her over to second, and a single up the middle by Isbel put the runners in motion and allowed Padilla to score off of an error by the center fielder in fielding the hit.
Tarleton State responded with a pair of runs in its half of the first, getting three straight hits to open the inning in scoring its first run and taking a 2-1 lead on a sac fly for the inning's second out.
The TexAnns added two more runs in each the third and fifth innings to hold a 6-1 lead late in the game.
UTPB got a pair of runs back in the sixth as Morgan took advantage of an error while leading off the inning to end up at second base.
Jackie Guzman was the benefactor of another error three batters later as she too reached second as Morgan scored, and Guzman reached home on a
Leslianne Ericson double to center.
UTPB placed two players on the Tarleton Invitational All-Tournament Team. Padilla hit .305 for the weekend, driving in two and scoring a pair of runs with a home runs and a double, and Guzman hit .364 over the four games with a pair of RBI.
