The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball kicked off its 2013 campaign Friday night, losing the first two games of a three-game set at Texas A&M International 6-0 and 6-2 at Unitrade Stadium in Laredo, Texas.
The Falcons left one stranded in the top of the second in the opening game when Jordan Van Atta was gunned down at the plate for the final out of the inning attempting to score from third on a fly ball into right field that was cut off by the second baseman before being thrown to the plate.
UTPB missed another opportunity in the fourth, getting back-to-back hits from
Tyler Forney and Van Atta. Both were left on the basepaths to end the inning as the Dustdevils got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
TAMIU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly into left field with one out and the bases loaded.
The home team broke the game open in its half of the sixth inning, putting up a five spot behind four hits and a pair of UTPB errors in the field.
Texas A&M International scored first again in the nightcap, breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by Ramon Sandoval with two outs in the inning.
The Dustdevils started out the bottom of the fourth with five consecutive base hits, scoring two more in increasing its lead to 4-0.
Another Sandoval two-run blast in the TAMIU eighth upped its lead to 6-0.
The Falcons scored their first runs of the day in their last inning as
Trey Cochran singled into right to score
Neil Madsen from third.
Ryne Head followed with a base hit through the left side that plated
Scott Hastings for the team's final run of the game.
UTPB and Texas A&M International wrap up the three game series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
