The UTPB men's basketball team grabbed a 14-point second half lead and held on at the end Saturday night to earn a 79-76 win over Cameron in Lawton, Texas.
The Falcons went into halftime with a 33-32 lead, led by
Thomas Feeney with nine points off of the bench and a team-high four rebounds in the first 20 minutes.Â
UTPB took an early 7-4 lead behind a pair of 3-pointers from
Andre Rieder in the opening three minutes. The Falcons led for most of the first and led by as many as seven halfway though the first at 22-15 on
Madison Turner's first of two threes in the half.Â
The Aggies later tied the contest up a couple of times over the remainder of the half before the Falcons went into the intermission up by one.
UTPB took over in the second half, taking a seven point lead on a pair of free throws followed by a layup from
Dwayne Soders.
The Falcons later pulled away, claiming a 14 point 67-53 lead with 3:58 remaining on a 9-1 run with layups from
Keith Martin, Soders and
Phadarius Taylor and a three from Feeney.
But Cameron didn't go down quietly, erasing the Falcons 14 point margin at 1:54 to a single possession by hitting a layup with 31 seconds remaining followed by a pair of threes, the second with three seconds remaining, before UTPB ran the clock out to escape with its first win of the season.
Soders and Feeney led the Falcons in scoring off the bench, Soders recording his second double-double in two games with 22 points and 11 rebounds and Feeney scoring a team-leading 22 points.
Desmond Henry led all players with 27 points for Cameron.
UTPB travels to Laredo next weekend for a pair of games against Hillsdale Baptist and Arlington Baptist. Tip-off Friday night is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
