The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team opened up its 2013-14 exhibition schedule Friday night with a 75-58 loss on the road against Division I Texas-El Paso at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
The Falcons struggled from the field on the night, hitting just 28 percent of their field goals and connecting on 23 percent in the first half as the Miners took advantage to take a 43-23 lead at the half.
UTPB regrouped in the second half, out-scoring UTEP 35-32 in the final 20 minutes, led by 12 points each from
Giselle Loya and
Valerie Barriga.
Loya led all players with 18 points on the night, scoring all of her points from behind the 3-point line on 6-of-14 shooting behind the arc.
Barriga added all 12 of her points in the second half for the Falcons, sinking each of her eight attempts from the free throw line as 11 of 12 players in the game for UTPB scored at least two points.
Jocelyn Cook and
Shaquiri Graham each grabbed five rebounds off the bench.
The Falcons are off until next weekend, traveling to Wichita Falls for its season-opener with games against Southeastern Oklahoma State and Southern Nazarene.
