Late Goals Help Falcons To 6-5 Overtime Win Over OCU

11/2/2013 10:08:00 PM

Down a man and running out of time, the UTPB men's soccer team pulled out a late goal in regulation and held on to score the game-winner in the second overtime period Saturday night in a 6-5 overtime win over Oklahoma Christian in Odessa, Texas.

UTPB trailed 5-4 with under five minutes in the second half when OCU took the lead on a blocked free kick that was rebounded and scored on by Seth Brown to give the Eagles a late lead.

The Falcons tied the game up once more, earning a corner kick when their first corner kick was cleared out of bounds by OCU. UTPB's second shot from the left corner landed in the middle of a large group of players from both teams in the middle of the box, and was shot into the net by an Oklahoma Christian player attempting to clear the ball for an own goal at 88:29 to tie the game at 5-5.

Each team had two shot attemps in the first 10 minutes of overtime, with the Eagles recording the lone shot on goal forcing a save out of UTPB goalkeeper Craig Branum.

The game-winner came in the 107th minute when Logan Sharp collected a rebound from a free kick that hit the defensive wall and shot the ball towards the right, where it was deflected into the back of the net for the team's sixth and final goal of the night.

UTPB led halfway through the first half, coming back from trailing 1-0 on goals from BJ Rodrick and Nathan Cotterell three minutes apart. Oklahoma Christian looked poised to head into halftime with a 3-2 lead after scoring the next two, but Rafael Borges beat the OCU keeper to the upper right corner with 11 second remaining in the first to head into halftime tied 3-3.

The teams traded goals as players for each team scored their second goals of the game 20 minutes into the second half; Rodgers Otieno gave the Eagles the lead back at 4-3 with his second of the game at 66:37, and Cotterell tallied his 15th of the season as Branum booted the ball from his box and Cotterell it up off the bounce in the UTPB attacking end to flick it past the keeper unopposed to knot the game up at 4-4.

The Falcons out-shot OCU 25-19 on the night and had 11 shots on goal to the Eagles' 10.

UTPB looks to end the season with a winning conference record Monday afternoon, closing out the year at noon against Dallas Baptist at home.
