UTPB women's basketball picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night, pulling away for a 56-50 win over Angelo State at Stephens Arena in San Angelo, Texas
The Falcons went into the half leading 25-17 in part to holding Angelo State to just five field goals on 20 attempts (16.7 percent), despite shooting just 33 percent in the first itself.
The shots started to fall for ASU out of halftime, scoring seven straight after
Valerie Barriga scored the first points on a basket for UTPB top get the game within one possession at 27-24.
The Belles took the lead at 34-33 at 12:34 of the second on a 3-pointer by Kayla Turner, but it proved to be their only lead of the night as Barriga and
Keyondra White sank shots to put the Falcons back on top by three.
UTPB pulled out to a 10-point lead lead on five straight points by
Katreese Locket down the stretch to hold a 51-41 advantage with just 1:37 remaining. ASU got to no closer than five points two different times in the final minute and a half in the Falcons six point win.
Locket led the Falcons with 10 points, all of them coming in the second half. Barriga and White each added nine points with
Giselle Loya scoring eight.
Turner led all players with 15 points and Hilari Adam added 13 points as the Belles shot just 23.6 percent (13-55) from the field on the night.
UTPB returns home for the first time this season Thursday night for its Heartland Conference opener, hosting Newman at 5:30 p.m.
