The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team picked up its first Heartland Conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon, breaking away from Texas A&M International in the second half in a 10 point, 66-56 road win in Laredo, Texas.
Neither team led my more than four points in the first half until the Falcons went on a 10-0 run ended by back-to-back 3-pointers from
Jocelyn Cook and
Giselle Loya to erase a four point margin and take a 25-19 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first 20 minutes.
UTPB pulled away in the early stages of the second half, scoring six straight on consecutive possessions with baskets from
Briannah Matthews,
Teisha King and
Taniqua Ards to take the lead for the final time of the day.
TAMUI pulled to within two a pair of times in the second half, but both were followed by
Brianna Dominguez 3-pointers that pushed the UTPB lead back out to five.
The Falcons upped their lead 10 points as a 7-0 run pushed their lead out to 57-47 with just over six minutes remaining in the contest.
UTPB kept the Dustdevils to cutting the lead down to nine, and led by as many as 13 in the final minutes of the game as King hit three free throws in a row.
She led the Falcons with 17 points, dished out five assists and grabbed four steals along with six rebounds.
Brianna Dominguez scored 14 points, hitting four 3-pointers on the day and led the team with seven rebounds. Ards added 13 points and Matthews chipped in 11.
Tina Dang led Texas A&M International with 17 points, and Samantha Chacon added 12 while sharing the team lead in rebounds with seven.
UTPB returns to the court next Saturday, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State at 2 p.m.
