The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team lost for just the second time in seven games Saturday night in a 67-57 loss at McMurry in Abilene, Texas.
The Falcons and War Hawks stayed within three points of each other for much of the first half as the first 14 minutes of the game featured three ties and three lead changes.
McMurry pulled ahead by six points on a Brock Kimball three pointer with 2:37 left in the half, but a
Fabian Sebastian free throw and
Tyler Reynolds basket cut the War Hawks lead in half at 24-21 heading into halftime.
Rob Heyer hit a 3-pointer coming out of halftime to tie the game at 24-24 and
Keith Martin scored a layup following a McMurry basket, but the War Hawks scored six in a row to pull ahead 34-28.
The Falcons could only get to within four points at 34-30 before McMurry used another run, scoring eight straight points to take a 42-30 advantage with 11:35 remaining in the game.
UTPB pulled to within seven points on a
Jonathan Uribe layup and Heyer three, but that proved to be as close as the Falcons would get over the remainder of the second half as McMurry led by double digits for much of the final seven minutes of the game.
Anthony Dees and
Xavier Martin led the Falcons with 13 points apiece. Dees hit three 3-pointers and Martin added a pair as the team hit 8-19 (42 percent) from downtown on the day. Sebastian led UTPB with eight rebounds.
Alfred Perez led all scorers with 15 points, hitting 7-9 field goal attempts for McMurry.
UTPB is back in action at home next week, hosting St. Mary's Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m.
