The University of Texas of the Permian Basin picked up a win in its Heartland Conference opener, defeating Newman in five sets 21-25, 25-20, 25-18, 22-25, and 17-15 Thursday night in Wichita, Kan.

The Falcons (2-4) hit a season-high .228 in their first five-set match of the season, including .212 or higher in four of their five sets. Melissa Lusk led UTPB with a .375 hitting average while Keeley Brogdon paced the team with 16 total kills on the night.

Ariel Fralick and Ariana Gallardo combined for 46 of the team's 51 assists, Fralick grabbing a team-leadin 26 with Gallardo scoring 20 on the night.

Danae Eckart led everyone in the match with 33 digs.

Katelyn Schmidtberge led all players with 23 kills for Newman (1-4). 

UTPB continues conference action this weekend, traveling to Arkansas-Fort Smith for a noon match Saturday afternoon.
