The University of Texas of the Permian Basin dropped a pair of four-set matches Saturday afternoon, losing 9-25, 28-30, 25-20 and 14-25 to St. Edward's before falling in a non-conference match 22-25, 21-25, 25-18 and 23-25 against Southwest Assemblies of God.
UTPB has few answers in the first set of the day against the Hilltoppers, dropping 13 of 14 points in the middle of the set as St. Edward's took the opener 25-9.
Both teams alternated points in a second set that went back and forth, with no team holding larger than a four point lead at any one point as UTPB led 13-9 early on. The Hilltoppers came back to grab one-point leads later on in the set, including a 25-24 advantage to serve for the match. The Falcons scored three straight points while facing match point and later found themselves looking to score match point, but St. Edward's scored the final three points of the set for a 30-28 second set victory.
UTPB rallied in set three, coming back from trailing 5-8 early on to take a 10-9 lead. A six-point run later in the set built up 19-13 lead that the Falcons would maintain over the remainder of the set for a 25-20 third set victory.
St. Edward's jumped out early in the decisive fourth set, climing to an insurmountable 16-4 advantage. UTPB scored five straight points to bring the set to 20-13, but the Hilltoppers closed out the match with five points in six attempts to wrap up the match victory.
Keeley Brogdon led the Falcons with 13 kills and a .310 hitting percentage in the opening match.
Hannah Rebb added 11 kills to match 11 digs.
Kelsey Zukowski paced all UTPB players with 25 digs and
Ariana Gallardo led the team with 23 assists.
Match two of the day against Southwestern Asseblies of God played out in much the same fashion as UTPB dropped the opening two sets of the day. The Falcons re-grouped to win the third, but dropped a hard-fought fourth set by two points after fighting back from trailing by five points late in the fourth.
Melissa Lusk tallied 17 kills while hitting .371 to pace UTPB. Gallardo once again led UTPB with 28 assists with Zukowski recording 16 digs.
Morgann Davis was involved in five blocks, two of them solo blocks
UTPB hits the road this coming week, playing four games in three days in Abilene, Texas, starting with future Heartland Confrence member McMurry. Game time Thursday night is scheduled for 7 p.m.
