UTPB rallied in a dominating second set against Dallas Baptist and had an opportunity to push the match to a fifth and final set before a furious comeback from DBU downed the Falcons 19-25, 25-12, 17-25 and 25-27 Thursday night in front of a wild and boisterous crowd at the Falcon Dome.
The Falcons responded with an amazing effort after dropping the first set, forcing a DBU timeout after scoring six consecutive points, five of them on kills with
Jamie Rodell and
Hannah Rebb recording two each. The teams traded points throughout the middle of the set until UT-Permian Basin fired off seven of the last eight points of set two with three of the final five coming on
Melissa Lusk kills to even the contest at 1-1.
Dallas Baptist took early control in the third, rattling off seven in a row to jump ahead 10-3. The Falcons wouldn't be able to recover, coming no closer than five points at 17-22, but three in a row from the Patriots won them the set and put them up 2-1.
UTPB broke away in the fourth, climbing ahead 14-10 midway through the set. Another four-point run gave the Falcons a six point lead at 18-12 ,and they eventually were able to serve to tie the match at 2-2 at 24-20, but they dropped four consecutive set points as Dallas Baptist brought the set to 24-all. A kill by
Terra Peil gave the Falcons another attempt to extend the match to a fifth set, but DBU took three consecutive points to end the night at 27-25 in the fourth.
Lusk led the Falcons with a .382 hitting percentage and 15 kills on the night, and was also involved in six blocks. Rodell added 10 more kills, hitting .318 in the match while Rebb paced UTPB with 23 digs.
Kristin Secord led all players with 17 kills, hitting .457 for the match.
UTPB continues home action this weekend with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, hosing St. Edward's at noon S and Southwestern Assemblies of God at 4 p.m.
