The University of Texas of the Permian Basin won its third game away from home in the 2012 season Tuesday night, traveling to Hobbs, N.M., where it earned a 18-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-23 victory over University of the Southwest.
UTPB fought back after falling behind 1-0 after the opening set as USW took a 15-7 lead halfway through the opener and would lead by no fewer than three before winning 25-18.
The Falcons came out strong in the second, putting the Mustangs down 12-5 before reeling off nine of the next 13 points to hold a 21-9 advantage in the eventual 14-point set win.
The teams played a much closer third set, with neither side being able to separate itself much until Southwest pulled ahead to a 19-14 lead. UTPB closed the gap to 19-17, and scored three straight points to even the set at 21-21. The Falcons tied it at 24-24 facing set point, and won the last two points to take a 2-1 overall lead.
UTPB ran out to an eight point lead early on in set four at 10-2, and the Falcons would need every one of them as the Mustangs fought their way back into the fourth, eventually pulling even at 23-23 late in the set. A pair of attack errors by the home team wrapped up the victory for UTPB at 25-23 in the fourth.
Melissa Lusk once again led UTPB in kills, pacing the offense with 12 while hitting .345 on the night.
Hannah Rebb added eight kills while being one of thee players to record 18 digs along with kelsey Zukowski and
Taylor Harmon.
Ariel Fralick led the way with 24 assists on the night.
UT-Permian Basin returns home to Heartland Conference action in two days, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle Thursday night at 7 p.m.
