The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's soccer team began its 2012 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Angelo State Thursday night at the UTPB Soccer Field.
The Rambelles got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute as Katie Squires shot from outside the 18-yard box on the right side squeezed into the upper left corner of the net to take a 1-0 advantage at 18:32.
The Falcons best opportunity came with six minutes remaining before halftime as
Jessica Saulter fired a free kick over the ASU line that floated just over the cross bar.
Angelo State added an insurance goal shortly after the half as a goal from the left side from Maggie Schaffer gave it a 2-0 lead.
Skylar Bluebird nearly cut the deficit in half in the 70th minute, breaking down the right side of the field in front of the ASU defense and firing a shot that was deflected above the cross bar off of the finger tips of ASU goalkeeper Danielle Edwards.
Angelo State out-shot UTPB 22-3 on the game, while each team won a pair of corner kicks.
Jenna Easley recorded seven saves in her first start in goal for the Falcons. Edwards stopped the lone shot on goal she faced on the day.
UT-Permian Basin returns to action next Monday, hosting New Mexico Highlands at the UTPB Soccer Field. Gametime is set for 1 p.m. on Labor Day.
