Four different players picked up at least two hits while
Arturo Carrera went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead UTPB to an 8-3 win over Newman.
The Falcons had 12 hits on the day including two for extra bases, while the duo of
Travis Wilcox and
Kyle Cormier kept the Jets grounded. Wilcox picked up the win after tossing six innings where he gave up seven hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Cormier pitched the final three innings without giving up a hit and striking out three in his first save of the season.
UTPB struck first in the bottom of the first when
Mike Briseno doubled to right center to score
Tanor Tinley, who reached on an error.
The lead wouldn't last long for the Falcons as the Jets answered with three runs in the third off three hits and took advantage of two UTPB errors. Neither team was crisp was defensively as a combined six errors were committed with the Jets being credited with four.
Brian Brademan pulled the Falcons within one in the bottom of the third with an RBI single through the right side to score
Ryne Head, who reached on a one-out walk. Brademan finished with two hits and a run scored on the day.
UTPB took the lead for good in the fourth when
Stephen Hrebicek, Head and Tinley all picked up RBI. Hrebicek singled to right for his only hit of the game, while Tinley, who was 2-for-5, singled to center. Head drove in Carrera on his groundout to second base. He currently has the team's longest hitting streak at six.
The Falcons would keep the offensive surge going in the fifth inning when Carrera doubled down the left field line which enabled Wilcox to score easily. Wilcox helped his own cause by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Three more hits in the seventh gave the Falcons two more runs which were more than enough for Cormier, who closed the door on the Jets.
The Falcons improved to 12-30 on the year and 9-22 in Heartland Conference play. They will remain at home this weekend when Arkansas-Fort Smith comes to Odessa for a three-game series starting Friday at 1 p.m. on Roden Field.
