AUSTIN – St. Edward's took two more games from the UTPB baseball team is it came from behind to take a 9-8 win in the first and a 5-3 victory in the second contest to sweep all four games of the series.
In the first game, the Hilltoppers scored three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth to erase an 8-2 Falcon lead.
UTPB struck early with a run in the first thanks to a solo homer by Artie Carrera – his second of the series. The Falcons would strike again in the second when
Scott Hastings hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in
Tanor Tinley, who tripled to right center. Carrera finished the game with a team-high three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Hilltoppers cut the Falcon lead in half in the third with a run before UTPB busted out for three runs in the fourth and fifth innings for a commanding 8-1 lead.
Fabian Rivera led off the fourth inning with a walk before
Travis Wilcox and Tinley hit back-to-back singles. Rivera would come around to score thanks to a Hilltopper error. UTPB would take advantage of another St. Edward's miscue as Jeff Rohrbach balked, allowing Wilcox to score from third.
Mike Briseno kept the rally alive with an RBI single to left which scored Tinley, who was one of three Falcons to score cross the plate twice.
The fifth inning saw the Falcons score two runs off wild pitches and another when Wilcox hit an RBI double to right center for his second hit of the game.
The Falcon offense would sputter the rest of the way as they managed just one hit the rest of the way, while the Hilltopper offense began to heat up.
In the second game, St. Edward's scored all three of its runs in the third after hitting back-to-back doubles for two if its eight hits in the game. The Hilltoppers added to their lead in the fifth with a single run before
Beau Anderson doubled to left to score Rivera, who led off the inning with a walk.
Michael Rice brought the Falcons within one after scoring Tinley on a fielder's choice.
St. Edward's made it 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Marshall Burford – his second of the series.
UTPB fell to 17-27 on the year and 7-20 in Heartland Conference play. The Falcons will remain on the road to face Abilene Christian on Tuesday before returning home for nine-straight Heartland Conference games.
