FALCONS HOLD OFF LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN; END SKID

<a href="/custompages/baseball/2012 stats/utpbbb16.htm">box score</a><br /> &nbsp;<br /> <strong>MIDLAND &ndash;</strong> The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team ended its 12-game losing skid by taking a 4-2 victory over Lubbock Christian at Citibank Ballpark.&nbsp; The win was the first for the Falcons since Feb. 4 when they defeated Texas A&amp;M International in Heartland Conference play.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> The Chaparrals, who are ranked No. 4 nationally in NAIA, were held to seven hits by four Falcon pitchers, while UTPB batters scattered nine hits, including two by four different players.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> The Falcons set the tone early as they scored two runs off three hits including RBI singles by Artie Carrera and Travis Wilcox in the top of the first.&nbsp; Mike Briseno started the rally with a two-out double down the right field line before scoring on Carrera&rsquo;s single through the left side.&nbsp; An error by Richard Bohlken in left field allowed Carrera to move to second and he would later score on Wilcox&rsquo;s single through the right side.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Lubbock Christian cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Paul Prestera, who pinch ran at first eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> Carrera and Wilcox came up big for the Falcons once again as they had a repeat performance in the top of the fifth.&nbsp; Carrera singled in Tyler Davis while Wilcox drove in Briseno.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> The four runs were enough for Kyle Cormier, Jeff Fisher-Gasper and Jacob Ricossa who came in relief for starter Josh Wise.&nbsp; Cormier picked up the victory after tossing 3.1 innings where he gave up one run off two hits while striking out two.&nbsp; Fisher-Gasper tossed 2.2 innings without giving up a run while Ricossa recorded his first save of the year after giving up one hit without a run in the bottom of the ninth.&nbsp;<br /> &nbsp;<br /> UTPB is now 2-14 on the year and will head to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday and Sunday in Heartland Conference action.&nbsp;<br />
