MIDLAND – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team ended its 12-game losing skid by taking a 4-2 victory over Lubbock Christian at Citibank Ballpark. The win was the first for the Falcons since Feb. 4 when they defeated Texas A&M International in Heartland Conference play.

The Chaparrals, who are ranked No. 4 nationally in NAIA, were held to seven hits by four Falcon pitchers, while UTPB batters scattered nine hits, including two by four different players.

The Falcons set the tone early as they scored two runs off three hits including RBI singles by Artie Carrera and
Travis Wilcox in the top of the first.
Mike Briseno started the rally with a two-out double down the right field line before scoring on Carrera’s single through the left side. An error by Richard Bohlken in left field allowed Carrera to move to second and he would later score on Wilcox’s single through the right side.

Lubbock Christian cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second when Paul Prestera, who pinch ran at first eventually scored from third on a wild pitch.

Carrera and Wilcox came up big for the Falcons once again as they had a repeat performance in the top of the fifth. Carrera singled in
Tyler Davis while Wilcox drove in Briseno.

The four runs were enough for
Kyle Cormier,
Jeff Fisher-Gasper and
Jacob Ricossa who came in relief for starter
Josh Wise. Cormier picked up the victory after tossing 3.1 innings where he gave up one run off two hits while striking out two. Fisher-Gasper tossed 2.2 innings without giving up a run while Ricossa recorded his first save of the year after giving up one hit without a run in the bottom of the ninth.
UTPB is now 2-14 on the year and will head to Fort Smith, Ark. to take on Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday and Sunday in Heartland Conference action.
