game one
game two

It was a homecoming The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team was hoping for as the Falcons swept the opening double header over Texas A&M International.  UTPB took the first game 7-0 before winning the nightcap 6-5.

The Falcons played on their home field for the first time in nearly a month and improved to 6-19 in the process.

In the opener, starter Kyle Cormier was impressive as he tossed a complete-game shutout for his third win of the season.  He allowed six hits and struck out five and took advantage of a five-run second inning by his offense.

UTPB cashed in on one of two Dustdevil errors in the game as pitcher Monolo Mendoza overthrew second base on a Brian Brademan fielder's choice.  The miscue allowed leadoff hitter Mike Briseno, who led off the inning with a single down the left line, to score from third.

The second inning saw the Falcons pick up three of their five hits in the game, including a two-run double by Fabian RiveraScott Hastings started the rally with a one-out double to center before Stephen Hrebicek was hit by a pitch.  Briseno walked to load the bases before Ryne Head reached on a walk to drive in Hastings.  Arturo Carrera made it 4-0 with a two-run single through the right side to plate Hrebicek and Briseno.  Rivera's hit gave UTPB a 6-0 lead which proved to be more than enough for Cormier.

The Falcons took advantage of two more TAMIU pitching miscues as Hastings reached on a walk and would later move to third on a failed pickoff attempt.  After another walk issued to Briseno, Hastings would make it 7-0 thanks to a wild pitch.

UTPB found itself in a hitting dual as the teams exchanged runs in the second game.  The Falcons pounded out 17 hits including four for extra bases.  Head, Carrera, and Tanor Tinley each had three hits in the win.

The Falcons wasted little time posting three runs in the bottom of the first after they tallied five hits, including and RBI double by Brademan.  After a run by the Dustdevils in the second, Hastings hit his first homer of the year over the left field fence, giving the Falcons a 4-1 edge.

TAMIU took its first lead of the series after putting up two runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-4 advantage.  The Falcons would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when Tinley drove in Carrera on a sacrifice fly to left.

The sixth inning saw the Falcons pick up five hits including a leadoff double by Hastings.  UTPB would eventually plate four runs, giving it a commanding 9-5 lead.  Not to be outdone, TAMIU plated three more runs in the eighth before Isaac Diaz came in relief in the ninth to shut down the Dustdevils and record his first save of the season.

The two teams will play the third and final game of the series at 1 p.m. at the UTPB baseball field tomorrow.
