FORT SMITH, Ark. – Arkansas-Fort Smith banged out 19 hits including five for extra bases to propel it to a 12-5 victory over The University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team. The Lions used two big innings to keep the Falcons at bay, scoring four runs in the third and five more in the seventh.
UTPB picked up eight hits in the contest, including doubles by
Fabian Rivera and
Stephen Hrebicek.
Mike Briseno and
Arturo Carrera each hit singles to extend their hitting streaks.
The Lions came out swinging early, scoring two runs off three hits, including an RBI triple by Jordan May. The Falcons cut the lead in half in the top of the second when
Michael Rice led off the frame by reaching on an infield error. He would move to second on a single by
Tanor Tinley before Hrebicek doubled him home.
Fort Smith extended its lead with four runs in the third thanks to four hits including three doubles in the inning two of which were back-to-back two-baggers by Austin Rawls and Nick Gumm.
UTPB kept the game close in the fifth when Rivera led off the inning with a double before advancing to third on a second single by Tinley. Hrebicek picked up his second RBI of the day when he drove in Rivera with a sacrifice fly to right field. Briseno followed with an RBI single to plate Tinley.
The Lions' five-run seventh proved to be too much for the Falcons despite scoring two runs in the eighth inning.
The Falcons will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Goodwell, Okla. to face Panhandle State for a three-game Heartland Conference series.
