game two box score

Runs came at a premium for the University of Texas of the Permian Basin baseball team as the Falcons dropped both games of a double header to West Texas A&M.  The Buffs took the opener 5-0 before squeaking out a 1-0 win in the second.

In the first game, Jess Cooper hit a solo home run to left in the top of the second inning, which proved to  be enough for starter Zach Walker, who gave up two hits in five innings of work.  West Texas A&M plated three more runs in the fourth and added another in the seventh.

The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the first inning when Brian Brademan singled to right field before he moved to second on a walk by Mike Briseno.  A ground out by Arturo Carrera moved the runners to second and third, but they were eventually stranded.  The Falcons would leave five runners on base for the game.

Carrera opened the fourth inning with a single to center and would later move to second on a groundout.  Scott Hastings reached on an error, allowing Carrera to move to third, but like the first inning, both runners would be left on base.

Tanor Tinley and Beau Anderson picked up the other two hits for UTPB, which fell to 1-5 on the season.  Kyle Cormier started for the Falcons, tossing two innings where he gave up one run off one hit while striking out two.  Jeff Fisher-Gasper gave one run off three hits while striking out four in three innings of work.

In the second game, West Texas A&M scored a single run in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Cooper to plate Eric Dorton, who led off the inning with a single to right.

UTPB made it interesting in the bottom of the inning when Briseno reached on a two-out walk and later stole second.  Carrera walked as well to put runners on first and second with two outs, but like the first game, they would go no further.

Travis Wilcox was the starter for UTPB, tossing two hitless innings while striking out four.

The Falcons will host St. Mary's in Heartland Conference action Friday and Saturday at Roden Field.
