Rob Heyer scored a game-high 21 points as four Falcons finished with at least 13 points as the University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's basketball team defeated Angelo State 79-67 in non-conference action.
Heyer tallied 15 of his 21 points in the first half as the Falcons regrouped from trailing 10-4 early on. A 7-0 run from UTPB on a 3-pointer from
Xavier Martin with a layup from
Fabian Sebastian and free throws from Heyer put the Falcons back in the lead at 11-10.
They led by as many as four midway through the first before the Rams came back and grabbed a five-point advantage on a layup and free throw by Antonio Dye to lead 24-19.
UTPB finished out the first half strong as Sebastian scored a layup and forced a turnover for a breakaway dunk with just under a minute and a half left in the first half to grab the lead back at 38-36. Heyer put the Falcons up by five with his third 3-pointer of the half with 55 seconds left to give UTPB a 41-36 halftime lead.
The Falcons never trailed in the second half and increased their lead to nine on baskets from Martin and Heyer. ASU was able to pull within one on a Ryan Marsh and-one layup and free throw, but scored from Colton Thompson and Heyer put the Falcons back up by five.
Tyler Reynolds and
Madison Turner gave UTPB some breathing room, hitting back-to-back threes with 9:08 left in the game that boosted the lead out to nine points at 61-52.
The Falcons never led by fewer than five points the rest of the game, hitting all 12 of their free throw attempts over the final nine minutes to wrap up the 12-point win.
Along with Heyer's 21 points, Sebastian recorded a double-double, hitting 9-of-11 shots to score 18 points and grab 10 rebounds. Martin chipped in 15 points and Thompson added 13.
Jovan Austin and Antonio Dye were the lone Angelo State players to score in double figures, each scoring 19 on the night.
UTPB returns to action in just over two weeks, traveling to St. Mary's for a 7:30 p.m. contest Jan. 3.
