Box Score

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin women's basketball team was able to hold off Wayland Baptist on the road  as Teisha King hit three of the team's final four free throws in the game's final minute as UTPB took a 66-64 road victory Thursday night in non-conference action in Plainview, Texas.

King sunk a pair of attempts from the free throw line that put the Falcons up by three at 65-62.

A Rochelle Norris basket on the Fighting Queens' next possession cut it down to a one-point game with nine seconds remaining in the game.

King went to the line after being fouled with seven seconds left, making one of her two attempts to lead 66-64.

Wayland Baptist had an opportunity to win, but Cece Williams' 3-pointer missed before the buzzer as the Falcons earned their second win on the road this season.

UTPB (5-2) was able to pull out to a six point lead early in the first half as King hit a layup and converted a steal into a 3-pointer, followed by a Briannah Matthews free throw two possessions later to take a 10-4 advantage five minutes into the game.

The Falcons pulled out to a 30-24 lead with 4:54 remaining in the first as Giselle Loya hit a three and Zeslie Johnson scored a jumper following a Wayland Baptist (7-4) miss.

Brianna Dominguez hit 3-pointers on back-to-back UTPB possessions at the end of the half, propelling the Falcons to a 38-32 lead after 20 minutes of action.

Taniqua Ards increased the lead to double digits coming out of the break, scoring on the first possession of the second half and scoring after a WBU turnover to put UTPB on top 42-32.

Ards scored a few minutes later, giving the Falcons its largest lead of the game at 48-36 with 16:16 remaining.

That lead would be erased later in the half, as Wayland Baptist used a 10-0 run culminating with three straight free throws from Norris that tied the game at 50-50 halfway through the second.

The Falcons trailed by a point two different times in the game's final five minutes, but never trailed in the final 2:21 as a free throw from King tied the game at 60-60, and LaChrista Nash rebounded King's missed free throw on her second of two attempts and went back up and scored to put the Falcons back up by two.

Matthews split a pair of free throw attempts with 1:39 left, breaking the game's final tie and putting UTPB up a point after Angeleigh Davis scored to knot the game up once again at 62-62.

King did a little bit of everything for UTPB, leading all players with 20 points as she also led all UTPB players with eight rebounds while dishing out four assists and grabbing five steals, four coming in the first half.

Matthews added 17 points for the Falcons, making 5-of-9 field goal attempts while scoring seven points at the free throw line. Ards also scored in double digits, chipping in 12 points.
