UTPB volleyball wrapped up weekend action in Abilene, Texas, dropping a pair of Saturday afternoon matches against Cameron and Abilene Christian.
The Falcons and Aggies swapped the lead six times in a close first set. Cameron rattled off four straight points to take a 17-15 lead midway through the first and wouldn't fall behind in the remainder of the set in taking the opener 25-22.
UTPB fell behind early in set two and was able to rally to within two points twice throughout the set, getting to 14-16. Cameron would rattle off four in a row shortly after to take a 21-15 lead and wrapped up the second set win at 25-19.
The Falcons came out stronger in the third set to take an early 4-1 lead. The Aggies whittled the lead down throughout most of the set and pulled to within one after scoring four in a row as the Falcons led by one at 20-19. The Falcons had a chance to serve for the set at 24-23, but two straight Cameron points had it serving for the match.
UTPB held off two match point serves but gave up two points in a row after holding a 26-26 tie as Cameron won the third set 28-26 to take the match.
Melissa Lusk (13) and
Jamie Rodell (11) led UTPB in kills, while
Danae Eckart paced the team with 23 digs.
UTPB struggled with Abilene Christian in the second match of the day, falling behind early on in each set.
UTPB was able to pull to within three at 10-13 in the first, but a four point swing for ACU put them back ahead by seven. The Falcons were able to rally late, closing to 19-22 off of five straight points and later pulled to withing one at 23-24, but ACU was successful on its third straight set point to claim the first set 25-23.
UTPB was unable to respond in the second as ACU ripped off six consecutive points at 15-6 to lead by nine, and the Wildcats maintained the large lead to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 set victory.
The Falcons played a mutch closer third set, out-scoring Abilene Christian 9-4 to rally and tie the set at 18 all. ACU rallied together six straight points to serve for the match at 24-18, and following a UTPB points, wrapped up the match with a 25-19 set win.
Lusk and
Keeley Brogdon led UTPB with eight kills each, and Kelsey Zuckowski scored 17 total digs.
Ariana Gallardo scored 15 assists and was followed closely by
Ariel Fralick with 13.
UTPB stays on the road this coming week, traveling to Wayland Baptist Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
