The University of Texas of the Permian Basin found a second half equalizer shortly after falling behind early following halftime, but a headed attempt on a cross into the box for Newman found its way into the back of the net in the fourth minute of the second overtime Saturday night as Newman defeated UTPB 2-1 in double overtime at the UTPB Soccer Field.
Newman took possession of the lead in the 60th minute as Matt McConnell took a pass from Victor Rojas in the left side of the 16 yard box and blasted it into an open right side of the net for a 1-0 lead. The goal came just after McConnell clanked a ball off of the post.
UTPB was able to answer shortly after as
Oscar Reyes applied a large amount of pressure in front of the Newman goal. Reyes fired off a pair of shots in the 62nd minute, one off of the chest of the Newman goalkeeper from short distance on the left hand side. He was able to grab the rebound with the keeper still on the ground and released a shot from a tight angle, hitting the upper left corner of the goal where the crossbar and post meet, narrowly missing his first goal of the year.
Reyes' effort led to UTPB scoring seven minutes later. He hit a shot off of the side of his foot from in front of the goal, knocking the ball into a retreating Jets defender that sent the ball heading toward the mouth of the Newman net. A Newman defender, attempting to clear the ball, blasted it into the top of the net for an own goal to tie the match at 1-1.
Both teams had scoring attempts in the first overtime period but came away with one shot each to show for it.
The Jets turned on the pressure in the second overtime session, ending the game on their third shot of the period. McConnell sent a low cross into the box at the far post, finding Marcio Souza who hit a low header under the hands of UTPB keeper
Chris Benavides into the lower right corner for the game-winner.
Benavides and Newman keeper Robin Allard each came up with five saves apiece on the day in 104 minutes of action.
The speedy Reyes led UTPB off of the bench with five shots and three shots on goal.
UTPB returns to action shortly, traveling to Eastern New Mexico Monday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
