The University of Texas of the Permian Basin volleyball scored their second consecutive win in as many days in Abilene, Texas, defeating Midwestern State in a neutral site contest 25-18, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-23 Friday night at Moody Coliseum on the campus of Abilene Christian.
UTPB held a substantial lead in a majority of the opening set, leading 8-2 on four consecutive kills by
Terra Peil, Keely Brogdon and two from
Jamie Rodell. The Falcons hit a match-high .261 in the first set with 17 kills and five errors to take an early 1-0 lead.
Midwestern State pulled away in the middle of set two after UTPB held an 11-10 lead, scoring seven of eight points to control the set at 17-12. The Falcons fought back, bringing it to within two points twice at 19-21 and 22-24 before dropping the set by three.
UTPB trailed for a majority of the third set, leading for one point at 8-7 before alternating between trailing by one point and tying with the Mustangs four times in eight points before MSU pulled out by two at 18-20. UTPB brought the match to another stalemate at 21-21, but two straight points from Midwestern State gave them a 23-21 advantage. The Falcons came back with three straight kills, one from Rodell to tie the set at 23-23 and two in a row by
Ryley Carman to take a 2-1 overall lead.
The Falcons led for a large part of the fourth, picking up an early 4-0 lead and later increasing it to 13-8. Midwestern State rallied near the end of the set, scoring four points in a row to take a 21-20 lead while looking to extend the match to a fith set. But UTPB took control, scoring three straight points to maintain a 23-21 advantage and would hold on when MSU brought it to 24-23, winning on match point by a kill from Peil.
Lusk led UTPB in kills for the second consecutive night, collecting 16 in the four set match while hitting .317. Rodell led the Falcons with a .357 hitting percentage while Brogdon also racked up double digit kills with 12 also.
Ariel Fralick scored 26 assist, and
Danae Eckart scored 25 total digs, with four other players tallying at least 10 digs on the night.
UTPB returns to action in Abilene Saturday afternoon, playing Cameron at 12:30 p.m. and hosts Abilene Christian at 3.
