Dylan Slaughter and
Tyler Gibson combined to give the University of Texas of the Permian Basin an early 2-0 lead Thursday night, but four straight unanswered goals from Oklahoma Christian to end the night sent UTPB home with a 4-2 loss.
Slaughter's first strike of the season came in the 17th minute from in front of the net, picking up a loose ball that OC failed to clear after nearly 10 seconds of bouncing around in the six-yard box. Slaughter kicked the ball off the hop and placed the ball into the left side of the net with a forceful strike for the game's first goal.
Gibson added his team-leading third goal of the year in the 28th minute on a throughball from
Jose Anchondo, dribbling to the top of the 16-yard box where he released a shot off of the Eagles' goalkeeper's hands that still found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Oklahoma Christian grabbed one goal back, scoring two minute before halftime as Sam Guernsey brought down a pass inside the box and shot to the left side to score.
The Eagles would do a majority of their damage in the second half, tying the game as Ricardo Chinchilla rebounded his own blocked pass attempt in time to score six minutes after halftime to even the game at 2-2.
Domenico DeGrazia and Tommy Guernsey added goals in the 59th and 75th minutes, respectively, that would put the Eagles out on top for the remainder of the game.
Chris Benavides suffered his first defeat of the season in net for UTPB, making one save on the night.
Gibson led a UTPB attack on offense that peppered OC with 21 shots total, nine of them on net, with five of them himself and four coming on goal.
UTPB stays at home this weekend, hosing Newman Saturday afternoon with a 2:30 p.m. kick-off.
