The University of Texas of the Permian Basin men's soccer took an early 1-0 lead Thursday night, but a penalty kick awarded to St. Edward's in the second half gave the visitors the lead in the game's final lead change as the Falcons suffered a 2-1 loss at the UTPB Soccer Field.
Tyler Gibson scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season just 1:31 into the game, heading in a free kick taken from midfield by
German Chavarria that found Gibson in the right side of the 16-yard box that he placed to the left post out of the reach of St. Edward's goalkeeper John Kaschak.
The Hilltoppers leveled the score moments before halftime as Daniel Riley scored in midair, redirecting a volley into the box from Sam Burns from just in front of the UTPB net for St. Edward's first goal of the night at 42:41.
Andrew Fox put the Hilltoppers ahead in the 70th minute on his seventh goal of the year as the referee called hand ball on UTPB in the box.
St. Edward's held a 16-10 shot advantage on the night and took nine corner kicks to UTPB's five.
Jose Anchondo led the Falcons with four shots, two of them on goal, while Branum made three saves in goal for UTPB.
The Falcons close out the 2012 home portion of their schedule this weekend, hosting Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
